Also known as devil's claw, the beaked gable flower is a very rare perennial herb with open flowers appearing in clusters. Each single flower in the umbel resembles a freshly blown glass vase, with a deep purple tip made up of fused petals and an arching pistil visible on close inspection. The species was awarded the Royal Horticultural Society Merit Award in 1993.
Native to the craggy rocks of the southern Alps, it prefers calcium carbonate-rich, alkaline, well-drained soils, and flowers from June to August, making it vulnerable to snails or slugs.
🌱Where it grows: endemic to the Dolomites in the southern Alps, distributed in France, Italy and Austria, grows in wet rock crevices at 300-2000 metres
